Quick answer: Fly non-stop from London Heathrow to Miami (about 10 hours) at least one day before your sailing, and stay a night in Brickell, Downtown, Miami Beach or near the airport. On sailing day, it is a short taxi or rideshare to Terminal V at PortMiami, arriving at the time slot you chose in the Virgin Voyages app. On the way home, Virgin’s disembarkation runs until about 10:45am, so a mid-afternoon or evening flight back to the UK is the comfortable choice.
Miami is Virgin Voyages’ Caribbean home, with sailings year-round including The Beach Club at Bimini. We sailed Resilient Lady from Miami in April 2026, calling at Bimini and Grand Cayman, so this is the journey we would plan for our own family: easy, unhurried and with a buffer built in.
Direct flights from the UK to Miami
From London Heathrow
Three airlines fly non-stop from Heathrow to Miami, with several flights a day between them:
- Virgin Atlantic: our preferred airline, with two flights a day to Miami
- British Airways: our next choice
- American Airlines
Virgin Atlantic is our preferred airline for Miami, with two flights a day, and British Airways is our next choice. For our April 2026 Resilient Lady trip we flew Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow and used the Upper Class Wing.
British Airways also flies twice a day, and American Airlines at least daily. The flight takes roughly 9.5 to 10.5 hours outbound. Miami is five hours behind the UK, so a morning or lunchtime departure usually lands you in the afternoon local time. Schedules change by season, so we’ll check the current options for your dates.

From Manchester and regional airports
From Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff and Scotland, you’ll usually connect. The common options are:
- A short connection via Heathrow onto a direct Miami flight.
- A connection via a US hub such as New York, Charlotte, Atlanta or Dallas.
- A connection via a European hub such as Dublin, Amsterdam or Paris.
If you connect in the US, you clear immigration at your first US airport, so allow a generous connection time. Dublin has US preclearance, meaning you clear US immigration before you fly and land in the US as a domestic arrival. Check whether a Dublin to Miami flight runs on your dates, or connect onwards in the US.
Don’t forget your ESTA
UK passport holders need an approved ESTA before flying to the US. Check the latest entry requirements on GOV.UK foreign travel advice and apply only through the official ESTA website.
Why you should arrive a day early
Always fly in at least the day before you sail. Long-haul flights are delayed more often than we would like, and the ship won’t wait. Arriving early also means:
- You sleep off the flight before embarkation day.
- You can arrive at the port fresh, at your chosen time, not straight from the airport.
- If your luggage doesn’t arrive with you, you have time to sort it out.
Many of our Sailors add two or three nights and treat Miami as part of the holiday.
Where to stay in Miami the night before
PortMiami is close to Downtown, so every area below is a short ride from the terminal. It mostly comes down to the kind of stay you want.
| Area | Best for | Roughly to Terminal V |
|---|---|---|
| Brickell | Rooftop bars, restaurants, a city feel | Short taxi ride |
| Downtown / Bayfront | Being closest to the port, waterfront views | Very short taxi ride |
| Miami Beach (South Beach) | Beach time, Art Deco, a proper pre-cruise holiday | Around 20 to 30 minutes, traffic depending |
| Near Miami International Airport | One night only, late arrivals, early starts | Around 25 minutes (about 10 miles) |
Times are a rough guide in normal traffic. Allow extra on busy mornings.
Our tip: if you are only staying one night after a long flight, Brickell or Downtown keeps the next morning simple. If you have two or three nights, Miami Beach feels like a holiday before the holiday, and some of the South Beach hotels are lovely.

Hotels we’ve stayed in and inspected
We’ve stayed in Miami before and after several Virgin sailings, and on our last trip we spent a day inspecting hotels in Miami Beach so we can recommend them properly. Here’s where we’ve been.
YOTEL Miami, Downtown (our night before, April 2026). We stayed here before our Resilient Lady sailing. It’s handy for PortMiami, the rooms are smart and compact, and the TV even greeted us with a Virgin Voyages welcome screen. Ideal if you’re only in for one night.
Hotel Croydon, Mid-Beach (where we’ve stayed). We’ve stayed at the Croydon on Collins Avenue, a restored Art Deco hotel a short walk from a quieter stretch of beach than South Beach. We stayed in a Queen Queen room (two queen beds). Here’s our room tour:

The Goodtime Hotel, South Beach (inspected). Pharrell Williams’ hotel is all candy-pink, palm prints and mint green, with a library lounge, a pink terrace restaurant and one of the best pools in South Beach. Rooms are light and pretty. If you want a post-cruise stay that feels like a holiday in itself, this is the one we’d point you to.

The Tony Hotel, South Beach (inspected). You’ll know it by the famous Art Deco spire on Collins Avenue. Inside there’s a colourful bar, a garden courtyard and a rooftop pool with views over South Beach. Great for Art Deco fans who want to be in the thick of it.

Moxy South Beach (inspected, and we stayed for dinner). Fun and sociable, with neon, murals, a buzzy bar and a rooftop pool that’s lovely at sunset. We had a look round, then stayed on for dinner. It suits Virgin Sailors down to the ground: if you like the vibe on board, you’ll like it here.

Grand Beach Hotel, Mid-Beach (inspected). Further up Collins Avenue, away from the South Beach crowds. It’s a bigger, calmer beachfront hotel with a smart restaurant, an espresso and gelato bar, and bright, airy rooms. A good pick for a few relaxing nights by the sea before or after your sailing.

We can add any of these to your booking as part of an ATOL-protected package with your flights.
Getting to Terminal V at PortMiami
Virgin sails from Terminal V, 718 N Cruise Blvd, Miami, FL 33132, on the north-west side of the port. It is a bright, purpose-built terminal and one of the nicest we’ve sailed from. Our full port-day guide is here: sailing from Miami with Virgin Voyages.

Your options
- Taxi or rideshare: the easiest choice from a hotel or the airport. Porters at drop-off take and tag your bags.
- Private transfer: we can arrange this as part of a fly-cruise package, so there’s nothing to book on the day.
- Free City of Miami trolley: stops near Terminal V. Fine if you’re travelling light, less so with big suitcases.
- Fort Lauderdale airport: Terminal V is also reachable from Fort Lauderdale, though it’s a longer drive.
Check-in and arrival times
- Start your check-in (“Ready to Sail”) in the Virgin Voyages app. You can begin as soon as your booking is made.
- Choose a Terminal Arrival Time in the app.
- Arrive at your chosen time, not earlier. Terminal access is limited to your slot and there is no outdoor seating to wait in.
Our top tip: start online check-in straight away, because that’s when you pick your port arrival time. Unless you have Deep Blue Extras or a package with priority boarding, you’re likely to get an afternoon slot, and Virgin is strict about arrival times. Starting early gives you the best chance of an earlier one.
Luggage drop-off opens at 9am, so you can drop bags and come back at your slot time, no earlier than 15 minutes before it. Boarding generally starts around 2:15pm. Deep Blue Extras members can arrive from 1:45pm for Priority Check-In, and RockStar Sailors have their own check-in lounge.
Luggage tags are emailed about a week before you sail, or you can get them at the terminal. Your Band, which you use to open your cabin and pay on board, is handed to you at the terminal when you check in.

On board: first things first
Once you’re on, head for a drink and a bite while you wait for your cabin. The dining team is usually in Sip or Razzle Dazzle on embarkation day if you want to sort restaurant bookings, and if a restaurant is full, standby works: join the line outside and ask. Then enjoy the sail-away bubbles: 30 minutes of free bubbles at sail-away on every ship. Our first things to do after booking guide has more.

The way home: disembarkation and your flight
Virgin’s disembarkation runs from when the ship is cleared in the morning until about 10:45am. You pick a disembarkation slot in the Virgin Voyages app under “Book a Shore Thing”, then choose your final port and “Disembarkation Group”. On the last morning, the Homecoming guide appears in the app with everything you need for getting off.
You need to be out of your cabin by 10am. With an evening flight, we usually carry our own bags off so we can stay on board as late as possible. If you’d rather not, you can put your bags out the night before, which we’ve done on some sailings too.

What’s the earliest sensible flight home?
UK flights from Miami mostly leave in the late afternoon and evening, which works well. As a rule of thumb:
- Don’t book a flight before early afternoon. You need time to get off, clear US customs, get to the airport and check in for an international flight.
- An evening flight is the most relaxed option, landing in the UK the next morning.
- Got a later flight? Airline bag drop may not open until a few hours before departure, so check your airline’s rules. If it isn’t open yet, ask a hotel to hold your bags and enjoy a final afternoon in Miami.
On our last trip, we filled our final morning with a speedboat ride with Thriller Miami from Bayside Marketplace out across Biscayne Bay. It’s a fun way to see the city from the water, with brilliant views of the Downtown skyline and the cruise ships at PortMiami, and a lovely last look at Miami before the flight home. You can book direct or through GetYourGuide.

Fly-cruise packages and ATOL protection
As your agent, we can package your flights, hotel and cruise together, and the whole holiday is ATOL protected. If a flight is cancelled or an airline fails, you are covered, and you have one UK point of contact to fix it. We can add the pre-cruise hotel, airport and port transfers so you just turn up.
We can sometimes access exclusive cruise airfares too, which can bring the overall price of the package down compared with booking each part separately.
Cruise-only bookings with us are covered by our PTS protection.
