Virgin Voyages Disembarkation: Your Last Morning and Getting Home to the UK

Brilliant Lady in Vancouver harbour with mountains behind

Quick answer: On Virgin Voyages you either put your tagged bags outside your cabin on the last night or carry them off yourself in the morning. We usually walk off with our own bags, because we like to leave the ship as late as possible. You pick a disembarkation time slot in the Virgin Voyages app, and everyone is usually off by about 10:45am. Customs at the port is quick, so with most UK flights leaving in the evening, you’ll have most of a day to fill in Miami, Los Angeles or Vancouver.

Nobody wants the holiday to end, but on Virgin the last morning is refreshingly unhurried. After 16 Virgin sailings, flying home from Miami, Vancouver and Los Angeles, this is how we handle it.

The last night: packing and luggage

You have two options for your bags.

Option 1: Put your luggage out the night before

Pack your main cases on the last evening, check your luggage tags are attached, and leave them in the corridor outside your cabin by the time given in the Virgin Voyages app. The crew take them off the ship overnight, and you collect them in the terminal in the morning, where bags are grouped by deck. The exact cut-off time for putting bags out is in the Virgin Voyages app, so check it on your last afternoon.

Keep back a day bag with: – Passports and phone chargers – Medication – Toiletries and tomorrow’s outfit (including shoes!) – Anything valuable or fragile – A layer for a cold aircraft

The classic mistake is packing the clothes you meant to wear home. We’ve seen a few sheepish Sailors in dressing gowns at breakfast.

Option 2: Carry your own luggage off

If you can manage your own bags, you can walk off with them. This is often the quickest way off, and it means you can keep everything in your cabin until morning. Lifts get busy on the last morning, so allow extra time or travel light.

This is what we usually do. We prefer to leave the ship as late as possible and pack in the morning, and carrying our own luggage means we’re not tied to the bag hall, though we have sometimes put our bags out the night before.

Settle up the night before

Check your folio in the Virgin Voyages app on the last evening. Bar Tab and any onboard credit are applied first, then your card is charged. If something looks wrong, sort it with Sailor Services before you go to bed rather than in the morning queue. Our bar tab guide explains how charges are applied.

Disembarkation time slots

Virgin asks you to pick a disembarkation time slot in the Virgin Voyages app (in “Book a Shore Thing”, under your final port). Slots are not compulsory, but they’re strongly recommended if you have a flight, and the app will remind you if you forget.

Virgin says disembarkation runs through to 10:45am, so nobody is rushed off at dawn. You do need to be out of your cabin by 10am, though, even if your slot is later. If you’re still on board after your slot, announcements will guide you to the gangway. On the last morning, the Homecoming guide appears in the Virgin Voyages app, and we always give it a quick read over breakfast.

That’s late compared with other cruise lines, and it’s one of the reasons we love Virgin. If your UK flight isn’t until the evening, there’s no prize for getting off first.

Our last morning, step by step

This is how we usually do it:

  1. Wake up late. We almost always take the last slot, around 10:30 to 11am.
  2. Pack in the morning, as we carry our own bags off.
  3. Grab a bite at The Galley. We’ve done brunch a couple of times too.
  4. Get a coffee before 10am. Big tip: on disembarkation morning, Grounds Club takes last orders at 10am, because that’s when your onboard account is switched off and you can’t charge anything else. If you have free Sailing Club coffees or credit left to use, get them in before 10.
  5. Relax in The Roundabout while the queues thin, rather than rushing off.

We rarely fly home the same morning. We pick evening flights, or go on to another destination, so there’s no rushing and no waiting around for taxis.

Staying on for a back-to-back?

Handy to know if you’re staying on board for a second sailing: once accounts switch off at 10am, you can’t charge anything until the new sailing is loaded onto the ship, usually around midday to 1pm. That includes food, so have a good breakfast. Virgin will tell you about this if you’re sailing back-to-back.

Breakfast on your last morning

You’ll still get breakfast. The Galley is open, and if you’d like a sit-down breakfast, there are brunch options in The Wake and Razzle Dazzle. Tables are limited, so book early: the 45-day dining head start on Essential fares really helps here. The Homecoming guide in the Virgin Voyages app shows what else is serving that morning, and our guide to where to eat breakfast on Virgin Voyages covers the usual venues.

Last-morning venues get busy at around 7:30–8:30am, so go early or late, and remember you need to be out of your cabin by 10am.

Our tip: when we head out for breakfast, we leave our cases packed by the door and tell our cabin host they’re welcome to come in, start stripping the bed and empty the bins. They usually appreciate it, because turning the beds round is the most time-consuming part of their morning, and the deeper clean happens after we’ve left.

Customs on arrival

Miami, Los Angeles and Seattle (USA)

At PortMiami, US Customs and Border Protection uses facial recognition. If you checked in with your passport, your photo is matched in a second or so as you walk through. Virgin notes that this applies to Sailors who checked in with a passport, and you can ask for a manual check instead. Processes at other US ports can differ, so keep your passport to hand.

Vancouver (Canada)

If your sailing ends at Canada Place, you’ll go through Canadian border control instead.

Before you travel, check the entry requirements for the US and Canada on GOV.UK foreign travel advice, and apply for any ESTA or eTA only through the official ESTA and Canada eTA websites.

Got a day to fill? Ideas before an evening UK flight

Flights from Miami, Los Angeles and Vancouver to the UK are overnight flights, and most leave in the afternoon or evening (check your airline for exact times). That leaves a day to enjoy. First, sort your bags.

Luggage storage: ask your airline whether you can drop bags early, or use a paid luggage storage service in the city.

Miami

Our Resilient Lady sailing in April 2026, via The Beach Club at Bimini and Grand Cayman, finished here, and Miami is an easy city to fill a few hours in.

  • Wynwood Walls for street art and coffee
  • South Beach and an Art Deco wander along Ocean Drive
  • Bayside Marketplace, just across from the port, for an easy, close-by lunch
  • A lazy lunch in Little Havana on Calle Ocho

Miami Airport is close to the port, but traffic can be heavy, so leave plenty of time. Our guide to sailing from Miami has more.

Los Angeles

LA is big and traffic is unpredictable, so stay close to the airport or the port. – Santa Monica or Venice Beach are on the right side of town for LAX – Manhattan Beach for a sunny lunch near the airport – San Pedro itself has a waterfront and the Battleship USS Iowa museum

Read our Vancouver to LA review for how our own last morning went.

Vancouver

Vancouver is one of our favourite cities and very easy to explore on a final day. – Walk or cycle the Stanley Park Seawall – Lunch at Granville Island Public Market – Browse Gastown, a short walk from Canada Place – The Canada Line SkyTrain runs from Waterfront station to YVR in around 25 minutes

Our Vancouver pre-cruise guide has more ideas that work just as well after your cruise.

Should you fly home the same day?

For most UK Sailors, an evening flight on disembarkation day works well. We rarely fly home the same morning ourselves; we choose an evening flight or travel on somewhere else. If your flight leaves before about midday, you’re cutting it fine; book a later flight or plan a hotel night instead. If you’re booking flights with us as part of a package, your holiday is ATOL protected and we’ll time them for you.

FAQs

What time do you get off a Virgin Voyages ship? You choose a time slot in the Virgin Voyages app. Disembarkation usually runs until about 10:45am, which is late compared with other lines. We usually take the last slot, around 10:30 to 11am.

Can I leave my luggage somewhere after disembarking? Usually, yes. Ask your airline about early bag drop, or use a paid luggage storage service in the city.
