Quick answer: If the Virgin Voyages app shows Virgin Voyages restaurants as full, don’t panic. Dining times in the app change all the time, so keep checking for slots opening, and visit the dining team on embarkation day. There’s no waitlist in the app; instead, go on standby by joining the line outside the restaurant and asking. Early and late tables free up most often. All the restaurants are included in your fare, so it’s worth persisting.
Opening the Virgin Voyages app to find every slot at The Test Kitchen greyed out is a rite of passage for Virgin Sailors. We’ve been there on more than one of our 16 sailings, and we’ve still eaten everywhere we wanted to, often on standby. This guide covers what to do when reservations look full. For a tour of each restaurant, what it serves and which ships have which venue, see our main Virgin Voyages restaurants guide.
Why Virgin Voyages restaurants look full so quickly
There are no main dining rooms on Virgin. Instead you get six included restaurants, and each one seats a lot fewer people than a traditional cruise dining room. Popular slots (7pm to 8pm, especially on sea days) disappear first.
Our own estimate is that around 75% of tables are booked before the ship sails. That sounds alarming, but a quarter of the capacity is still in play once you’re on board, and plenty of pre-booked tables are cancelled as plans shift.
When can you book? Dining windows by fare
When you can start booking depends on your fare and cabin type. This is the single biggest reason one couple has a full dining plan while another sees nothing available.
| Fare or cabin | Booking window opens |
|---|---|
| Base | 15 days before sailing |
| Essential | 45 days before sailing |
| Premium | 60 days before sailing |
| RockStar and Mega RockStar suites | 120 days before sailing |
If you booked Base to save money, expect less choice at first. Our VoyageFair Choices guide explains what each fare includes and why Essential is what most Sailors book.
Tip: put a reminder in your phone for the exact day your window opens and book that morning. Plan your dinners around your ports first, so you don’t lock in an early table on a day you’re back late from a Shore Thing. The Virgin Voyages app shows the all-aboard time in both ship and local time, which we find makes this much easier to get right.
Keep checking the Virgin Voyages app
There’s no official waitlist in the Virgin Voyages app. What there is, constantly, is movement: dining times in the app change all the time as Sailors swap and cancel. So the trick is simply to keep looking.
What works for us:
- Check little and often. Open the dining section a few times a day, before you sail and on board. Slots appear and vanish quickly.
- Look at the days before sailing. Cancellations pick up when people firm up their port plans.
- Be flexible on time. If you’d happily eat at 6pm or 8:30pm, check both.
- Release tables you don’t want. If your plans change, cancel promptly. It helps the next Sailor.

Embarkation day: visit the dining team
On embarkation day the dining team is usually set up in Sip or Razzle Dazzle. Go and see them early, before the crowds after lunch. They can see live availability, move bookings around and sometimes find gaps that the app doesn’t show yet.
Have a rough plan in your head before you arrive: which restaurants you’re missing, which nights you’re flexible and which nights are off-limits because of shows, Scarlet Night or late port departures. Friendly and flexible goes a long way.
Standby: join the line and ask
We do standby all the time. Everyone panics when restaurant bookings open, and if you want prime slots, do book ahead. But once you’re on board, plans change. People make friends, or eat too much at The Galley or by the pool and don’t fancy dinner, so reservations are cancelled all the time. It’s genuinely easy to get a walk-in or change a booking.
If you have no reservation, join the line outside the restaurant and ask the host. They’ll either tell you to come back by a certain time, or ask you to wait in line until the next table is free.
Our tip: if we can’t change a booking in the app, we pop to the restaurant during the day and ask. They’ve often fitted us in. As a couple, or two or three friends, it’s easy; larger groups may struggle. We’ve done it so many times that we no longer worry about dining times at all, because our own plans change a lot on board.
Standby works best:
- At opening time, before the first wave of reservations arrives
- After about 8:30pm, once the early sittings have turned
- On port days with a late departure, when the ship is quieter
- On the first night, when many Sailors are still exploring
That’s from our own experience rather than an official Virgin policy, but it has worked for us time and again.
Which restaurants are easiest to get?
Every ship is different and every sailing has its own rhythm, but in our experience:
Usually easier – Pink Agave and Extra Virgin have good capacity and turn tables reasonably quickly. – The Razzle Dazzle space (Lucky Lotus on Scarlet, Ariya on Valiant, Rojo on Brilliant, Razzle Dazzle on Resilient) often has standby space, especially for an early dinner. – Gunbae has shared grill tables, so a pair can often be squeezed in alongside another group, which is half the fun.
Usually hardest – The Test Kitchen is small and the five-course menu means slow table turns. Book this one the minute your window opens. – The Wake is the special-occasion choice, with sea views at the back of the ship. Sunset slots are the first to go.

Best times to try for a table
Prime time is 7pm to 8pm. If you can be flexible, you’ll find far more choice:
- 5:30pm to 6:15pm is often wide open, and you’ll still make an evening show.
- 8:30pm onwards suits Sailors who like a late, unhurried dinner before the night gets going.
- Port days are easier than sea days for most restaurants.
Backup plans that are still good
If a night really doesn’t come together, you won’t go hungry, and you won’t be stuck at a buffet. There isn’t one.
- The Galley is the food hall, with counters cooking to order: think noodles, burgers, tacos, salads, pizza and sweets. It’s casual and genuinely good.
- Ship Eats is room service, delivered to your cabin and currently ordered on the tablet in your cabin rather than the app. It’s a lovely option on a balcony or Sea Terrace for a quiet night in.
- Supper clubs are ticketed shows with dinner. LOLz (Scarlet) and It’s a Ship Show (Valiant) are included; Another Rose (Resilient) and Up With a Twist (Brilliant) carry a charge of around $50.

FAQs
Why are all Virgin Voyages restaurants fully booked before I sail? Higher fares and suites get earlier booking windows, and popular slots go fast. Keep checking the app, as dining times change all the time, and try standby on board; many tables free up.
Can you eat at Virgin Voyages restaurants without a reservation? Yes. We do it all the time. Join the standby line outside the restaurant and ask, or pop in during the day to see if they can fit you in. Early (around opening) and late (after 8:30pm) are your best chances, and couples and small groups find it easiest.
How far ahead can I book restaurants on Virgin Voyages? Base fares can book 15 days before sailing, Essential 45, Premium 60, and RockStar and Mega RockStar suites 120 days.
Is there a waitlist for Virgin Voyages restaurants? No, there’s no official waitlist in the app. It’s standby: join the line outside the restaurant and ask, and they’ll either give you a time to come back or ask you to wait for the next free table. Keep checking the app too, as slots open up all the time.
Which Virgin Voyages restaurant is hardest to book? The Test Kitchen, closely followed by The Wake at sunset. Book both as soon as your window opens.
Do Virgin Voyages restaurants cost extra? No. All six restaurants are included in your fare. Drinks are extra, and some supper clubs carry a charge.
