Who is this cruise for?
- Virgin Voyages fans looking for something new. Pacific Coastal only runs twice a year, once in each direction. This is the end of Alaska season sailing, heading south from Vancouver to Los Angeles.
- Anyone who’s dreamed of the California coast. San Francisco, Santa Barbara, San Diego and Catalina, without the long drives or repacking a suitcase every night.
- Lovers of Vancouver. It’s one of the rare chances to sail Virgin Voyages from Vancouver, so you can spend a few days exploring one of our favourite cities before you board.
- Disney fans. The cruise ends in Los Angeles, around an hour from Disneyland. Add a few days at the parks and you’ve turned a cruise into a much bigger holiday.

Virgin Voyages sets the itinerary and times, and they may change.
A note on tender ports. Santa Barbara and Catalina Island are tender ports. Brilliant Lady anchors just offshore, and boats take you to and from the harbour throughout the day. It’s a short, easy ride, and part of the fun. Just allow a little extra time to get back to the ship, and if you have mobility concerns, talk to us before you book.
The places you’ll go
Vancouver, British Columbia
You’ll board at Canada Place, right on the waterfront, and sail out past Stanley Park into the Salish Sea. This is prime humpback territory, so keep your camera handy on deck.
Our tip: fly in a couple of days early. On our 2026 trip we spent a full day on a Prince of Whales marine safari and saw humpbacks, Steller sea lions and a transient orca, then explored VanDusen Botanical Garden and hopped across to Granville Island by water taxi.
San Francisco, California
You’ll sail under the Golden Gate Bridge twice: in at sunrise, past Alcatraz, and back out just before midnight. In between, you have a full day in the city.
- Chinatown and dim sum at House of Dim Sum, a 10/10 for us.
- The Painted Ladies and Lombard Street, then the view from Coit Tower, where you can spot the ship.
- Pier 39 for the sea lions, and Musée Mécanique for vintage arcade games.
- A Waymo ride. The driverless taxis are an experience in themselves.
Don’t miss the sail-out. Have dinner in the city, then get back on deck to sail under the Golden Gate Bridge, all lit up. We did both crossings in 2026, and they were two of the most memorable moments of the trip.
Santa Barbara, California
The ship anchors offshore and a short tender ride takes you into town. Santa Barbara is all Spanish-style architecture, painted tiles and palm-lined streets.
- The Courthouse and a wander along State Street and La Arcada.
- Hook & Press for doughnuts. The horchata one is worth the detour.
- Mai Tais at Sandbar before heading back to the ship.
San Diego, California
A full day in one of California’s most relaxed cities.
- La Jolla Cove for sea lions and their pups, just metres from the path.
- The Gaslamp Quarter for lunch and a stroll. We loved Las Hadas Grill.
- Brunch at Parakeet Cafe if you’re in La Jolla early.
Catalina Island, California
A little resort island off the LA coast, and the perfect last port before home. You’ll tender into Avalon.
- A sea lion boat tour. Ours even sailed right round Brilliant Lady.
- Look out for bright orange Garibaldi fish in the harbour.
- Pancake Cottage for breakfast, including gluten-free pancakes.
- Walk to the iconic Casino building and spot the painted tiles along the way.
Los Angeles, California
You’ll arrive early on Saturday morning. Virgin advises allowing up to an hour for the gangway to open. From here, you’re around an hour’s drive from Disneyland and even closer to Hollywood, depending on traffic, or it’s a short hop to LAX.
About Brilliant Lady: your three days at sea

On our 2026 sailing there was also a special Festival of Senses programme, with sensory dinners, a speakeasy where our phones were locked away, and food and drink events in The Manor. Virgin hasn’t announced whether it will return for 2027, but it shows the kind of extras this ship can pull out.

Pacific Coastal group cruise FAQs
Is this an adults-only cruise? Yes. Virgin Voyages is adults only, so every sailor must be 18 or over.
I’m travelling solo. Can I book? Yes. Solo sailors can book a Sea Terrace for sole use at our solo group rate of £1,823.88.
Why book through Magical Traveller rather than direct? Our group rate is 10% below Virgin’s current retail fare and comes with $200 to spend on board per cabin. You also get UK specialists who’ve sailed this exact route.
Will Kieran and Phil be on board? We’d love to be, and we’re hoping to join, but this isn’t a hosted group sailing, so we can’t promise it yet.
Can I use my Virgin Voyages placeholder? Yes, and you can combine it with our group rate.
Does the cruise still call at Astoria? No. Astoria, Oregon was on the original itinerary but has been replaced with an extra sea day. Some sites still show the old version.

What’s a tender port, and should it put me off? Not at all. In Santa Barbara and Catalina, Brilliant Lady anchors offshore and small boats take you to and from the harbour throughout the day. It’s quick and easy, and you get a great view of the ship from the water. If you have mobility concerns, let us know before booking.
What time can I leave the ship in Los Angeles? The ship arrives at 6:30am, and Virgin advises allowing up to an hour for the gangway to open. We’d suggest booking flights home for the afternoon or later, or better still, adding a few nights in LA or at Disneyland.
Do I need travel insurance? Yes, you’ll need suitable travel insurance from the time you book.

How much is the deposit? Just £314.80 per cabin for two sharing, or £314.60 for solo sailors, to secure your cabin. The balance is due by 13 May 2027. Full terms are in our booking conditions.
