Virgin Voyages Leaves Portsmouth: Your 2027 & 2028 Options from the UK

If you’ve sailed Virgin Voyages from Portsmouth, or you’ve been waiting for your next UK departure, there’s an important change to know about.

Virgin Voyages has confirmed that 2026 was its final scheduled UK season from Portsmouth. There are no Portsmouth sailings on the schedule for 2027, and no UK homeport planned for 2028.

We’ll be honest: we’re going to miss it. A good number of our 90+ nights with Virgin started on the south coast, and there’s nothing quite like a Portsmouth sail-away with a glass of bubbles in hand, watching the Spinnaker Tower shrink behind you.

But this isn’t goodbye. 2027 brings plenty of fly-cruise options from Barcelona, Athens, Miami and San Juan. Then in 2028, Virgin Voyages heads to Northern Europe for the first time with a brand-new season from Amsterdam, which you can reach without getting on a plane.

Here’s what the change means for your plans, and how to make the most of it.

The short answer for UK cruisers

  • 2026 was Virgin Voyages’ final scheduled Portsmouth season, for now.
  • There are no Virgin Voyages sailings from the UK in 2027.
  • 2027 options include the Mediterranean from Barcelona and Athens, the Caribbean from Miami and San Juan, and transatlantic crossings in between.
  • In summer 2028, Valiant Lady sails Virgin’s first-ever Scandinavia and Baltics season from Amsterdam.
  • Amsterdam is a short flight from most UK airports, or around four hours from London St Pancras on the direct Eurostar.
  • The 2028 sailings have been on sale since 14 August 2026.
  • Virgin Voyages is still 100% adults-only.

Why has Virgin Voyages left Portsmouth?

Portsmouth played a big part in Virgin Voyages’ early years. Since 2021, thousands of UK Sailors have walked up the gangway in Hampshire without needing a passport stamp or a flight.

The decision is best seen as a change in where the ships go, not Virgin turning its back on the UK. The line is putting more ships into the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, where demand from British Sailors is strong, and its European programme is making room for new homeports such as Amsterdam.

In practical terms, that means more sunshine, longer European seasons and easier access to ports like Barcelona and Athens.

It does mean flying, and that adds cost and a bit more planning. We won’t pretend otherwise. There’s one upside, though: you no longer need a long repositioning voyage from the UK just to reach the Mediterranean. A two-hour flight to Barcelona and you’re in the sunshine from day one.

Why a flight-inclusive package is the smart way to do it

When your holiday starts at an airport rather than a cruise terminal, how you book matters more.

Booking your cruise, flights, hotel and transfers together as one package means:

  • ATOL protection when your package includes flights, so if something goes wrong with an airline or supplier, you’re covered.
  • One point of contact. If a flight is delayed or changed, we sort out the knock-on effects for you.
  • Joined-up timings, so your flight, hotel night and transfer actually fit together.
  • Often better value than booking each piece yourself, especially once you add a pre-cruise hotel.

That’s the piece most people miss when they compare a headline cruise fare online. The cruise price is only part of the cost; the flights, hotel and peace of mind are the rest.

Your Virgin Voyages options for 2027

Mediterranean cruises from Barcelona

For most UK travellers, Barcelona is the easiest gateway. Flights run from almost every UK airport, and you’re there in around two hours.

Virgin Voyages’ 2027 Western Mediterranean itineraries link Barcelona with places like Corsica, Rome, the Amalfi Coast, Sicily, Mykonos and Athens. Look out for the eight-night Barcelona to Athens sailing on Scarlet Lady. It’s a lovely mix of Italian, French and Greek ports, and it’s one-way, so you can add a few nights at either end.

We’d always suggest a night or two in Barcelona before you board. Wander La Boqueria, see the Sagrada Família, and arrive at the ship relaxed rather than straight off a 6am flight.

Mediterranean cruises from Athens

Athens offers a different flavour of Virgin holiday, with itineraries built around the Greek Isles, Turkey, Albania and the Adriatic.

Highlights can include Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Chania, Ephesus, Istanbul, Dubrovnik, Kotor and Sarandë. Some sailings have late departures or overnights, so you get proper evenings ashore rather than a dash back for all-aboard.

Choose Athens if you love ancient history, dramatic coastlines and dinner by the Aegean. It’s also a great way to turn a cruise into a longer Greek holiday.

Caribbean cruises from Miami and San Juan

If you’re happy to go further for winter sun, Virgin Voyages continues to sail the Caribbean from Miami and San Juan.

Seven-night sailings make a classic week away, while 10-night options take you further, with more sea days to enjoy the ship. Depending on the itinerary, you might visit the Eastern, Southern or Western Caribbean, plus The Beach Club at Bimini, Virgin’s own private beach club.

Miami is ideal if you want to combine your cruise with Florida: a few nights in South Beach, Orlando or the Keys first. San Juan is perfect if you’d like to start with Puerto Rico’s colourful streets, food and warm evenings.

Wherever you sail, you get the same Virgin experience: adults-only, more than 20 eateries, Wi-Fi included, brilliant entertainment, and no formal nights or traditional buffet.

Looking ahead to 2028: Amsterdam becomes the new European gateway

This is the news Virgin’s UK fans have been waiting for.

In summer 2028, Valiant Lady homeports in Amsterdam for Virgin Voyages’ first-ever Scandinavia and Baltics season. Bookings opened on 14 August 2026.

Getting to Amsterdam from the UK

Amsterdam may be the closest thing to Portsmouth we’ve got, and you don’t have to fly:

  • Eurostar runs direct from London St Pancras to Amsterdam in around four hours. City centre to city centre, no airport queues.
  • Overnight ferries sail from Newcastle to IJmuiden (near Amsterdam) and from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, so you can bring the car and as much luggage as you like.
  • Flights to Amsterdam run from almost every UK airport, often in about an hour.

However you travel, we’d recommend arriving a day early. Amsterdam’s canals, museums and restaurants are too good to rush.

The 2028 season at a glance

  • 9 July 2028: Barcelona to Amsterdam, 10 nights (Casablanca, Lisbon, La Coruña, Cherbourg)
  • 19 July 2028: Scandinavia & Stockholm Overnight, 12 nights
  • 31 July 2028: Norwegian Fjords, 7 nights
  • 7 August 2028: Scandinavia & Hamburg, 7 nights
  • 14 August 2028: Arctic Circle & Norwegian Fjords, 11 nights
  • 25 August 2028: Amsterdam to Barcelona, 10 nights (Tangier replaces Casablanca), arriving in Barcelona on 4 September

Scandinavia & Stockholm Overnight (12 nights)

Oslo, Copenhagen, Gdańsk, Stockholm, Berlin (via Warnemünde) and Aarhus. The overnight in Stockholm is the star: a proper evening in the city’s old town, Gamla Stan, instead of a rushed day visit.

Norwegian Fjords (7 nights)

Molde, Nordfjordeid, Flåm and Bergen. Waterfalls, mountains and scenery so dramatic you’ll forget to look at your phone. It’s a perfect first taste of Northern Europe if you only have a week.

Scandinavia & Hamburg (7 nights)

Oslo, Copenhagen and Hamburg. Three great cities in a week, ideal if you prefer cobbled streets and café culture to fjords.

Arctic Circle & Norwegian Fjords (11 nights)

This is the headline sailing. Departing Amsterdam on 14 August 2028, it visits Tromsø, Honningsvåg, Trondheim, Åndalsnes and Olden, all new ports for Virgin Voyages, with a marquee Arctic Circle crossing along the way.

Think a crossing celebration on deck, the midnight sun and evenings where it never quite gets dark. It’s the sort of trip where you lose track of time in a beautiful place, in the best possible way.

The repositioning voyages

Don’t overlook the two 10-night sailings that open and close the season. Barcelona to Amsterdam takes in Casablanca, Lisbon, La Coruña and Cherbourg, a superb mix of Morocco, Portugal, Spain and France. It’s a great way to combine a Barcelona city break with a sailing that ends a short hop from home.

The Summer Season Pass

For the ultimate Virgin summer, the Summer Season Pass now covers the Amsterdam sailings. It includes a Central Sea Terrace, priority boarding, upgraded Wi-Fi, complimentary excursions and a welcome package. Ask us for the latest pricing.

Why the 2028 sailings could sell quickly

This isn’t just another Northern Europe cruise programme.

It’s Virgin Voyages’ first-ever Scandinavia and Baltics season, on one ship, with a handful of departures and a long list of ports that are new to the fleet.

We expect the Arctic Circle sailing to be especially popular with past Sailors who loved the Portsmouth and Iceland seasons. An adults-only ship, Northern Europe, overnights and the midnight sun is a rare combination.

If you have fixed dates, want a particular cabin or are travelling with friends, plan early rather than holding out for a last-minute deal. The best-placed Sea Terraces and RockStar Quarters always go first.

Sea Terrace or RockStar Quarters?

For most Sailors, a Sea Terrace is the sweet spot: your own balcony, the famous hammock and a cabin designed for unwinding after a day ashore.

On a fjords or Arctic sailing, a Sea Terrace really comes into its own. Open the doors, climb into the hammock and watch the scenery roll past. Honestly, it’s one of our favourite places on any Virgin ship.

RockStar Quarters are the step up: suites with more space and extra perks from the moment you arrive at the terminal. They’re perfect for a big birthday or anniversary, or if you simply want the most elevated Virgin experience.

Take a look at our Virgin Voyages deck plan guide before you choose. On scenic sailings, which side of the ship you’re on and how high up can make a real difference.

When should you book?

For 2027, start with where you’d love to be and work backwards:

  1. Choose between the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or a transatlantic.
  2. Compare the full cost of flights, hotels and transfers, not just the cruise fare.
  3. Plan to arrive at least one night before embarkation.
  4. Pick your cabin category before the best locations go.
  5. Leave room in your budget for shore experiences and a few extra days ashore.

For 2028, book as soon as your plans are fairly firm. Amsterdam is easy to reach, but availability on a first season can change quickly.

Booking early also gives you the pick of flights, Eurostar times and pre-cruise hotels. You can then build in a stay in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Athens or Florida rather than fitting it all together at the last minute.

Why book with Magical Traveller?

We’re one of the UK’s top Virgin Voyages First Mates. We’re a Gold First Mate, a First Mate Champion award winner, and winners of multiple Virgin Voyages incentives. Between us, we’ve spent 90+ nights on board across 14+ sailings, so we know these ships properly.

Here’s what that means for you:

  • We plan the whole trip: flights from your nearest UK airport, the right cabin, hotel nights, transfers, travel insurance and what you’d genuinely enjoy ashore.
  • We explain the small print. Virgin Voyages’ Best Price Guarantee has specific terms, and we’ll tell you exactly what applies to your booking.
  • We’re here when it matters, including out of hours if something comes up while you’re away. That really counts when your holiday starts at an airport rather than at home.

Virgin Voyages from the UK: still worth getting excited about

Portsmouth has been a special chapter, and many of us will miss stepping on board so close to home. But this isn’t the end of Virgin Voyages for British travellers.

2027 is about sunshine: the Med, the Caribbean or a Halloween crossing. 2028 brings Northern Europe within easy reach again, by plane, train or ferry. Choose your route, find the right cabin and get ready to be lost somewhere wonderful.

Virgin Voyages 2027 and 2028 FAQ

Can I still sail Virgin Voyages from the UK?

Not on the current schedule. 2026 was the final scheduled Portsmouth season for now, and no UK departures are planned for 2027 or 2028. You can still sail easily by flying to Barcelona, Athens, Miami or San Juan, and in 2028 you can reach Amsterdam by Eurostar, ferry or a short flight.

Can I get to the Amsterdam sailings without flying?

Yes. Eurostar runs direct from London St Pancras to Amsterdam in around four hours, and overnight ferries sail from Newcastle and Harwich.

When did the 2028 Amsterdam sailings go on sale?

They went on sale on 14 August 2026. Availability, fares and cabin categories can change, especially on the 11-night Arctic Circle sailing and the 12-night Stockholm overnight voyage.

Is Virgin Voyages still adults-only?

Yes. Virgin Voyages is 100% adults-only, for guests aged 18 and over. There are no kids’ clubs or family activities, which makes it popular with couples, friends and solo travellers.

Which cabin is best on Virgin Voyages?

A Sea Terrace is the most popular choice for its private balcony and hammock. RockStar Quarters offer more space and extra perks. The best option depends on your budget, your itinerary and how much time you’ll spend in your cabin.

Should I fly out on the day my cruise departs?

We recommend arriving at least one night before embarkation. It gives you a buffer if your flight is delayed, and you start your holiday calmly rather than rushing from the airport to the ship.

Is a fly-cruise package protected?

When you book your cruise and flights together as a package with us, you’re ATOL protected. Ask us and we’ll explain exactly how it works for your booking.
