Travel insurance for a Virgin Voyages cruise from the UK

South Beach, Miami, seen from the ship

Quick answer For a Virgin Voyages cruise from the UK you need a travel insurance policy with cruise cover, high medical limits that work in the USA, and cover for missed departure, cabin confinement, itinerary changes and cancellation. Buy it as soon as you book, not when you pay the balance. Your GHIC won’t help in the USA or most of the Caribbean, and ATOL or PTS protection is not a substitute for insurance.

Every Virgin Voyages holiday from the UK now starts with a flight, whether to Miami, Vancouver, Seattle or a European port. That changes what your insurance needs to do. Here’s what to look for, in plain English.

We don’t recommend a particular insurer. Policies change often, and the right one depends on your age, health and trip. What we can do is tell you what matters after 100+ nights on Virgin Voyages.

Do you need special insurance for a cruise?

Yes. A standard single-trip or annual policy often doesn’t cover cruising unless you add it. The UK government’s own guidance says cruises usually need an extra level of cover, because getting to a hospital from a ship is harder and more expensive.

Look for a policy that names cruise cover explicitly, either built in or as an add-on. If the word “cruise” doesn’t appear in the policy wording, assume you’re not covered.

What should cruise travel insurance cover?

Medical cover that works in the USA

This is the big one. Most Caribbean sailings start and end in Miami, and the Pacific Coast and Alaska sailings start in Vancouver or Seattle and can finish in Los Angeles. If you fall ill before or after the cruise, you’ll be treated in the US system.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office estimates that a stomach bug or infection treated in a US hospital, possibly with medical evacuation, could cost £150,000 or more without insurance. Choose a policy with medical limits in the millions, check it covers the USA and Canada (some cheaper “worldwide” policies exclude them), and check it includes medical evacuation from a ship and repatriation home.

The ship’s medical centre charges for treatment too, and you’ll usually pay on board and claim back. Keep every receipt.

Missed departure

If your flight is delayed and you miss the ship, a good policy helps you catch up with it at the next port. Check whether missed departure covers both the outbound flight and connections, and what limit applies. Our standing advice: fly in at least a day early, especially for Miami. It’s cheaper than any claim and far less stressful.

Cabin confinement

If the ship’s medical team asks you to stay in your cabin (for example with a stomach bug), some policies pay a small daily benefit. It won’t change your life, but it’s a sign the policy was designed with cruising in mind.

Missed ports and itinerary changes

Ports get swapped or skipped because of weather, tides or port congestion. Tender ports such as Grand Cayman, Juneau, Santa Barbara and Catalina are the most likely to be missed if the sea is rough. We’ve tendered into Juneau on Brilliant Lady (May 2026) and Grand Cayman on Resilient Lady (April 2026), so we know how much depends on the conditions on the day. On one Mediterranean sailing a thunderstorm meant we skipped Marina di Carrara, and Virgin added a different port in Corsica instead. Itinerary changes like this are part of the cruise contract: port fees for a missed port are normally refunded, but onboard credit is rare. So check whether your policy includes missed-port cover; cruise cover often pays a set amount per missed port. In hurricane season this matters more; see hurricane season guide.

Cancellation and curtailment

Set your cancellation cover to at least the full cost of the holiday: cruise, flights, hotels and anything prepaid on board. Remember that Virgin’s Base fares are non-refundable from the moment you book, and Essential fares become non-refundable closer to sailing. Insurance is what protects that money if you have to cancel for a covered reason like illness. Read more in our VoyageFair Choices guide.

Pre-existing medical conditions

Declare everything you’re asked about, including conditions that feel minor and anything awaiting tests. An undeclared condition can invalidate the whole policy, not just a claim linked to it.

Activities and Shore Things

Check that excursions like snorkelling, kayaking, ziplining or helicopter tours in Alaska are covered. Some policies list these as hazardous activities that need an upgrade. On our Alaska sailing we booked a Juneau whale-watching and Mendenhall Glacier Shore Thing through the app before we sailed, so it’s worth checking your cover at the same time as you book trips like these.

When should you buy cruise insurance?

As soon as you book. Cancellation cover only protects you from the date the policy starts, so if you wait until the balance is due and something happens in between, you’re not covered. The government’s travel insurance guidance gives the same advice.

We’ve seen why this matters. We’ve had clients with medical emergencies just a few days before sailing who had to claim on their insurance. Under Virgin’s terms, the cruise is non-refundable at that point. Virgin will try their best to help, but personal circumstances are exactly what insurance is for. That’s why you need a policy in place the moment you book: it covers you from booking, not just for the trip itself.

Does my GHIC cover a Virgin Voyages cruise?

Not for most Virgin Voyages holidays. The UK Global Health Insurance Card works for state healthcare in EU countries and a short list of others. It does not cover the USA, Canada, the Bahamas, Mexico or the Cayman Islands, and it never covers medical care on a ship or repatriation.

If you’re on a Mediterranean sailing, take your GHIC anyway. Some insurers waive the excess if you use it. But it is never a replacement for travel insurance; the NHS says so itself.

Insurance vs ATOL and PTS protection: what’s the difference?

These get mixed up all the time, and they do completely different jobs.

What it protects What it doesn’t do
ATOL Your money and your trip home if a travel company fails, when flights are part of a package Doesn’t cover illness, cancellation by you, or medical bills
PTS protection Money paid for non-flight bookings if the travel company fails Same: not a health or cancellation policy
Travel insurance You: medical costs, cancellation, missed departure, lost bags Doesn’t usually cover a travel company going bust (some policies add this)

When we book your Virgin Voyages holiday with flights as a package, it carries ATOL protection, and our bookings are protected by PTS through Merlin Travel Group. You can read more on our PTS protection page. You still need insurance on top.

Does Virgin Voyages sell its own insurance?

Virgin Voyages sells its own Voyage Protection plan, but it’s run through a US insurance partner for US-based Sailors and only covers the parts of the trip booked through Virgin. For UK travellers, an independent UK travel insurance policy that covers the whole trip (cruise, flights, hotels and medical) is the better route.

FAQs

Do I need travel insurance for a Virgin Voyages cruise? Yes. We’d never sail without it, and the UK government advises buying cover for every trip abroad. Medical treatment at sea and in the USA is expensive.

Is an annual multi-trip policy OK for a cruise? Often, as long as it includes cruise cover, covers the USA, and the trip length fits within its limits.

When should I buy insurance for my cruise? On the day you book, so cancellation cover starts straight away. We’ve had clients fall ill days before sailing, when the cruise was already non-refundable, and their insurance is what covered them.

Does my GHIC work in Miami or the Caribbean? No. It doesn’t cover the USA or most Caribbean islands, and never covers care on a ship.

Is ATOL protection the same as travel insurance? No. ATOL protects you if a travel company fails. Insurance protects you if something happens to you.

What if I miss the ship because my flight is late? Missed departure cover can pay to get you to the next port. Flying in a day early is the best protection.

Are tender port cancellations covered? Some cruise policies pay a fixed amount per missed port. Check the wording.
