Quick answer: Virgin Voyages spends Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean, mostly sailing from Miami, with festive décor, holiday cocktails, a festive PJ party and special menus on board. New Year’s Eve brings live music all over the ship and a big night of dressing up. It’s a warm, grown-up alternative to a British Christmas, but festive sailings and flights from the UK sell out early, so start planning about a year ahead.
Swapping a grey British December for sunshine, a sea view and someone else doing the washing up is a tempting idea. Christmas on Virgin Voyages isn’t a traditional turkey-and-crackers affair, and that’s the point.
To be upfront: we haven’t sailed Virgin over Christmas or New Year ourselves. Friends, family and customers have, though, and they loved it. Virgin doesn’t go all out for Christmas, but there are extra decorations and festive treats. It’s a more relaxed way to do Christmas rather than an over-the-top one, which is exactly why it appeals.
Here’s what to expect, from what happens on board to how to get there from the UK without paying a fortune for flights.
Where does Virgin Voyages sail at Christmas?
Over Christmas and New Year, Virgin’s ships are in the Caribbean. Most sailings leave from Miami, and Virgin’s own Beach Club at Bimini features on many itineraries. Expect a mix of:
- Shorter sailings (around four or five nights) to Bimini, the Bahamas and Mexico
- Week-long sailings to the Western Caribbean (think Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Mexico)
- Longer Eastern Caribbean sailings to islands such as St Maarten, St Kitts and Puerto Rico
We sailed Resilient Lady from Miami in April 2026, calling at The Beach Club at Bimini and Grand Cayman, so we know these routes well. One tip from that trip: Grand Cayman is a tender port, so allow extra time getting ashore and back.
Some festive sailings leave from San Juan in Puerto Rico instead, so check the departure port for your dates.
Ships don’t have fixed homes or routes, so check the specific dates you’re interested in. Our guide to sailing from Miami covers the port and terminal, and the Virgin Voyages hub has everything else.

What does Virgin Voyages do for Christmas on board?
Don’t expect Christmas to take over the ship. From what our friends and customers tell us, it’s relaxed rather than over the top, with extra decorations and treats. Virgin publishes a festive programme each year, and it changes. Based on what Virgin has announced for recent holiday seasons, you can expect:
- Festive décor on board and at the Miami terminal, including photo spots
- A holiday twist on the PJ party, with ugly Christmas jumpers and onesies encouraged
- Holiday cocktails and festive pub crawls
- Classic Christmas films shown during the voyage
- A festive show from the Happenings Cast (what is the Happenings Cast?)
In recent years Virgin’s holiday programming has started on selected sailings from late November and run through to New Year, so check what’s planned for your dates.
Virgin runs themed parties, and they change. Check the Virgin Voyages app for what’s on your sailing.
Is there Christmas dinner?
Don’t expect a carvery. Virgin’s six included restaurants keep their own personalities over Christmas, so you might be eating Korean barbecue at Gunbae or tacos at Pink Agave on Christmas Day. For many of our clients that’s a big part of the appeal. Virgin does add festive touches, though, with seasonal specials, themed cocktails and pastries on holiday sailings.
Christmas Day dinner slots are popular, so book as soon as your dining window opens. If you miss out, don’t give up: dining times in the app change constantly, the dining team is usually in Sip or Razzle Dazzle on embarkation day, and standby (joining the line outside and asking) has worked for us many times. Our restaurants guide explains the venues, and our restaurant bookings full guide covers what to do if everything looks booked.
New Year’s Eve on Virgin Voyages
New Year’s Eve is where Virgin really goes big. In recent years there’s been live music all over the ship, dancing on deck and in The Manor, and an invitation to dress up in your finest. Virgin has also offered:
- Special one-night-only menus in the restaurants
- Photo booths to capture the night
Virgin runs themed parties, and they change. Check the Virgin Voyages app for what’s on your sailing.
Our tip: book a later dinner (around 8:30pm) on 31 December so you roll straight from dessert into the celebrations. If you’d rather a quieter night, a balcony or Sea Terrace cabin gives you your own front-row seat for midnight at sea. See our Sea Terrace cabin guide.
What’s an adults-only Christmas like?
Virgin is adults-only (18+), and that changes the whole feel of a festive cruise. There’s no queue for Santa’s grotto and no overexcited children at 6am. Instead it’s sunshine, good food, relaxed bars and, if you want it, a party.
It’s a lovely fit for: – Couples who want Christmas to themselves – Groups of friends who’d rather toast the New Year on deck than in a crowded pub – Solo travellers, with a sociable ship and no family-focused programme. Read our solo sailing guide. – Anyone who finds the traditional Christmas a bit much
If you’re travelling as a multi-generational family with children, Virgin isn’t the right choice. Find out why in are Virgin Voyages adult-only cruises?
Escaping a British Christmas: the UK angle
Flights to Miami at Christmas
Flights from the UK to Miami over Christmas and New Year are among the most expensive of the year. School holidays drive demand, and the best fares go early.
- Book early. Book your flights as soon as seats for your dates go on sale.
- Fly in at least a day early. Winter weather in the UK or the US can delay flights, and your ship won’t wait. A night in Miami before your cruise is cheap insurance.
- Consider a fly-cruise package. When we book your flights and cruise together, your holiday is ATOL protected.
- Try shoulder dates. A sailing that leaves just before or after Christmas can save a lot on airfare.
Weather in the Caribbean in December
December is dry season in much of the Caribbean, with warm, sunny days. Evenings can feel cooler at sea, so bring a light layer. Miami itself can be surprisingly fresh in the mornings.

What to pack for a festive Virgin cruise
- Something sparkly for New Year’s Eve
- A Christmas jumper or festive PJs for the party
- Red for Scarlet Night (Virgin’s signature party): see our Scarlet Night guide
- Your usual sun cream and swimwear
Our packing guide and dress code guide have the full list.
Money: what does a festive Virgin cruise cost?
Christmas and New Year sailings are peak season, so fares are higher than the rest of the winter. Book early for the best choice of cabins, especially Sea Terraces and suites.
Remember that gratuities are no longer included in new bookings; Virgin currently adds a daily service gratuity of $22 per Sailor to your folio, or $20 a night if you prepay (checked October 2026). When you book with us, you can prepay gratuities in pounds. Our VoyageFair Choices guide explains what each fare includes, and our bar tab calculator helps you budget for those festive cocktails.
When should you book a Virgin Christmas cruise?
As early as you can. We recommend:
- 12 to 18 months ahead: choose your sailing and secure your cabin. When you book with us in pounds, the balance isn’t due until 120 days before sailing, and as long as you’ve booked an Essential fare or above, if a better offer comes out before then, we can reprice your cruise for you.
- As soon as flights go on sale: book flights for your preferred dates.
- When your dining window opens: book Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve dinners first.
