Virgin Voyages for LGBT+ Sailors: Our Honest Guide

Kieran and Phil at Hubbard Glacier on Virgin Voyages Brilliant Lady

We’re Kieran and Phil, a married couple who run Magical Traveller together, and Virgin Voyages is the cruise line we keep coming back to. After 14+ sailings and over 100 nights on board, we’re often asked by LGBT+ Sailors: will we feel welcome?

The short answer is yes. Virgin is the most relaxed, inclusive cruise line we’ve sailed. But a good holiday is about more than a rainbow flag, so this guide covers what it’s actually like on board, the parties and shows you’ll love, the ports to look for, and the few places where it’s worth doing a little homework.

Why Virgin Voyages works so well for LGBT+ Sailors

  • It’s adults-only. Everyone on board is 18 or over, which changes the atmosphere completely.
  • There’s no dress code and no formal nights. Come as you are, and wear what you like.
  • The crew set the tone. In our experience Virgin’s crew are warm, diverse and openly welcoming, and that filters through to the whole ship.
  • The entertainment is fabulously camp. Drag, cabaret and themed parties are part of the core experience, not an add-on.
  • Couples are just couples. We’ve never felt we had to think twice about holding hands on deck or booking a table for two.

It’s worth saying: a Virgin sailing isn’t a gay cruise. It’s a mixed, adults-only crowd where LGBT+ Sailors are a visible, comfortable part of the ship. If you want an all-LGBT+ charter, those exist from time to time, but most of our LGBT+ Sailors prefer the mix.

Shows and parties you’ll love

Virgin’s entertainment is where the line’s personality really shines:

  • Scarlet Night, the signature red party that takes over the whole ship. Our Scarlet Night guide explains it all.
  • We Fancy in The Manor, a celebration of simply loving yourself. One of our favourite nights on Virgin.
  • The PJ Party, exactly what it sounds like.
  • Drag and cabaret, from the bottomless brunch to bingo with the Diva and the late-night shows.
  • The supper clubs, where dinner and a show become one very fun evening.

Virgin runs themed parties, and they change. Check the Sailor App for what’s on your sailing.

Our entertainment guide covers the shows in more detail.

To give you a flavour from our own sailings: on Resilient Lady in April 2026 that meant Love Love Love with The Hostess in The Manor, The Miss Behave Show and a big stage show to finish the week. On Valiant Lady in August 2026 it was We Fancy, the Latin night Club Caliente and a new game show, Nice Box, with The Diva.

LGBT+ meet-ups on board

Yes, there are LGBT+ meet-ups, and we’ve seen them listed in the Sailor App on our sailings. Truth be told, we rarely go ourselves. That isn’t a criticism: on Virgin we’ve simply never struggled to find other queer Sailors to spend time with. On our sailings we’ve seen plenty of gay men, lesbians and trans Sailors, and nobody seems out of place or unwelcome. That comes down to the nature of Virgin itself: it’s a relaxed, adults-only cruise where everyone just gets on with having a good time.

If you’re travelling solo, or it’s your first cruise, the meet-up is still a lovely, low-pressure way to find your people early in the week.

Queer-friendly ports on Virgin itineraries

Virgin’s itineraries include some of the world’s best-loved LGBT+ destinations. A few favourites to look out for when choosing a sailing:

  • The Mediterranean: Barcelona, Ibiza and Mykonos, all with famously welcoming scenes.
  • The Caribbean and Florida: Miami before or after your cruise, Key West on some sailings, and San Juan in Puerto Rico.
  • The Pacific Coast and Alaska: Vancouver’s Davie Village and San Francisco’s Castro, both easy to add as a pre or post stay.

We stayed in Vancouver before our Brilliant Lady sailing and loved the Davie Village area. Read about the trip in our Vancouver to LA review.

Amsterdam from the ship

On Valiant Lady’s August 2026 sailing we spent a day in Amsterdam, one of the most queer-friendly cities we’ve visited. The ship docked at the cruise terminal on the IJ and we spent the day wandering the canals. It was very busy, but the LEGO Escher Staircase installation was worth a look.

Miami before or after

After our Resilient Lady sailing in April 2026 we stayed on in Miami Beach: The Goodtime Hotel, the Art Deco streets, the colourful lifeguard huts and an afternoon at Wynwood Walls. It’s an easy, welcoming add-on to any Caribbean sailing.

A word about some Caribbean ports

We’d rather you hear this from us. A few Caribbean countries still have laws or attitudes that are less accepting of same-sex relationships. In practice, on a day ashore with a cruise ship, LGBT+ visitors very rarely have problems, but it’s sensible to be a little more discreet with public displays of affection in some ports, just as you might in parts of the world closer to home.

Before you travel, check the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for each country on your itinerary; each one has a section for LGBT+ travellers. And remember, on board and at the Beach Club at Bimini, you’re on Virgin.

Tips for LGBT+ Sailors

  • Pack something red for Scarlet Night, and something sparkly. You’ll use both.
  • Join the meet-up early in the sailing.
  • Book the supper clubs and brunch as soon as you can.
  • Add a pre or post stay in Miami, Barcelona or Vancouver.
  • Book through people who’ve done it. We’re happy to talk through itineraries, cabins and ports honestly.

Magical Traveller is gay-owned and run, so when you plan a Virgin voyage with us you’re talking to people who’ve been in your shoes, on board and ashore. Whether it’s your first cruise, a honeymoon or a big birthday with friends, we’ll help you pick the right ship, sailing and cabin, and we’ll be honest about anything that isn’t right for you.

LGBT+ Sailor FAQs

Is Virgin Voyages a gay cruise?

No. It’s a mixed adults-only cruise line where LGBT+ Sailors are a welcome and visible part of the ship. All-LGBT+ charters run from time to time.

Are there LGBT+ meet-ups on Virgin Voyages?

Yes. We’ve seen LGBT+ meet-ups listed in the Sailor App on our sailings, usually early in the voyage. We rarely go ourselves, simply because it’s so easy to meet other queer Sailors on board.

A few Caribbean countries are less accepting. Check the FCDO travel advice for each country, and be a little more discreet ashore where advised.

Will I meet other LGBT+ Sailors on Virgin Voyages?
